“A job well done”

Black Sluice Internal Drainage Board have completed their first dike maintenance season with Herder’s latest Cavalier mowing arm to general foreman Mick Johnson’s satisfaction, “They do a good job and I can’t fault them”.

Mick is no stranger to Herder having operated their machinery since the IDB bought its first Herder Rapier mowing arm with 2.2m head in the early nineties, a machine incidentally that is still putting in good service with a local farmer.

Black Sluice IDB maintain around 450 miles of dikes and rivers stretching to the west of Boston across to Sleaford, Bourne and West Pinchbeck. Of these the Cavalier has worked around 150 miles in 2006.

In total they currently operate three Herder arms with the Cavalier being the lightest, suitable for mid range tractors of around 100 hp (they have it working on a John Deere 6620). It is fully compliant with gross vehicle weight regulations and features the build and hydraulic standards associated with the company’s larger arms. Its compact format and stable mid-mount design were major factors in Black Sluice IDB decision to purchase.

Herder’s Cavalier MBK 120 is not only mid mounted, but also features a forward slewing arm to position the flail head within driver vision, a fact particularly popular with Black Sluice drivers. Operation is by a fully proportional electronic joystick control with electro hydraulic float system for convenient and smooth operation.

Herder’s Cavalier MBK 120 is available with a choice of flail mowers up to 180 cm width, together with weed mowing buckets and highway maintenance attachments. The Cavalier has a standard arm reach of 8m, and 8.8m with optional telescopic arm.

A variable displacement pump at 540 rpm PTO provides up to 90 litres/min for attachments with 60 litres/min for the controls. Flail attachment operating pressure is 330 bar, which provides 68 hp at the flail head motor to ensure effective operation on riverbanks, verges and hedges.
